Pope Francis Mentions “Blood Diamonds” in Encyclical

In his much-talked-about encyclical on climate change, Pope Francis mentioned blood diamonds in a list of societal ills.

“In the absence of objective truths or sound principles other than the satisfaction of our own desires and immediate needs, what limits can be placed on human trafficking, organized crime, the drug trade, commerce in blood diamonds, and the fur of endangered species?” he asked, on page 91 of a 194-page English translation.

In a press guide to the new encyclical, Vatican Radio said blood diamonds were a symptom of human self-centeredness, comparable to human trafficking and abandoning the elderly.
