Two Great Scottish Collections highlight Sotheby’s sale in LondonSotheby’s in London concluded its sale on 28 March with over 1000 participants driving the sale total of Two Great Scottish Collections to $4,768,981), over three times the presale estimate, with successful bids fielded from eight institutions.

There was a fervent interest in the history of Scotland with collectors out in force, eager to acquire items from two remarkable collections which each tell the story of an important family steeped in the nation’s past: the Forbeses of Pitsligo, tastemakers rooted in 18th -century Edinburgh, and the Marquesses of Lothian, an ancient and noble lineage.

The star of the sale was the Fettercairn Jewel – a 16th century virtuoso enamelled gold pendant set with an almandine garnet on the back – which was acquired by National Museums Scotland. This bidding of this piece drove the final price to £236,750, exceeding the pre-sale estimate of £30,000-50,000.

Harry Dalmeny, Sotheby’s UK Chairman, said: “These two collections provoked intense bidding throughout a marathon sale which lasted nine hours and saw a steady stream of auctioneers take to the rostrum. We’re thrilled to have been able to share with both collectors and public alike, through such rich content, as many revelations about the history of Scotland as about the families who assembled them over nearly four centuries.”

David Macdonald, Sotheby’s Specialist in charge of the sale, commented: “Though both collections recently made the journey from Scotland to London for the auction, it’s lovely to think that many of the items will make the journey back home again, especially the Fettercairn Jewel. The response from private collectors, not only Scottish but from all over the world, has been extraordinary, and the fact that a number of institutions were able to secure works was a fitting conclusion to what has been a unique celebration of all things Scottish.”

SSEF warns trade of sapphires from Madagascar, having a ‘Kashmir like’ appearanceSwiss Gemmological Institute SSEF has warned the trade of sapphires from a new deposit at Bemainty, near the small town of Ambatondrazaka in Madagascar, having a ‘Kashmir-like’ visual appearance.

Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki, SSEF notes that “The sapphires from this new source are characterised by a subtle and fine milkiness, which results in a velvety blue colour typical of top-quality Kashmir sapphires. In recent weeks, SSEF has analysed a significant number of sapphires from this source which were submitted to it by several reliable independent sources.”

Bemainty/Ambatondrazaka is the site of a new gem-rush in Madagascar. Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki, SSEF further noted that, “Unfortunately, many of these new sapphires are accompanied by gemmological reports describing them as being of Kashmir origin. We have recently tested a sizeable number of such ‘Kashmir-like’ sapphires submitted by clients, and ranging in weight from 5 to 50 cts, and concludes that many of these gems of so-called Kashmir origin actually originated from the new deposit near Bemainty/Ambatondrazaka in Madagascar. Our findings are based on meticulous microscopic observations, and also on an array of sophisticated scientific methods, for trace element concentration. The arrival of large quantities of new sapphires of Kashmir-like appearance is challenging for the gem market and gemmological laboratories alike, especially as we know that some of these Madagascar sapphires are being purposely introduced into the gem market with fraudulent claims of historic Kashmir provenance.”

DBMC honoured for its approach to ecological managementDe Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM) won the Wildlife Ranching SA award for ‘Biodiversity and Social Responsibility’, in recognition of its approach to ecological management, De Beers Group announced. The company picked up the accolade for its approach to ecological management at four private game reserves it runs in the Northern Cape and Limpopo Provinces.

Judges singled out DBCM’s “disciplined approach” as being “best-in-class in the industry” and referenced the success of its sustainable wildlife management practices and promotion of wildlife tourism. De Beers Wildlife, a part of DBCM, manages around 67,000 hectares of land in the Kimberley area of the Northern Cape.

It began to introduce a variety of species, including elephants, hippopotamus and crocodiles, at its ranches in the early 1970s and was one of the first breeders of disease-free buffalo in South Africa. It also safeguards more than 35 species on its sites that are classed as either endangered, threatened or protected, and hosts viable populations of sable, roan and tsessebe antelope.

Piet Oosthuizen, Senior Manager, Ecology and DBCM Properties, said: “As a company, we have had a strong focus on biodiversity management for many years. For every hectare of land affected by our mining activities, De Beers Group manages five times that amount for conservation. Managing game animals is a privilege and we make sure we do so in a manner that contributes value to the ecosystem without losing sight of the responsibility this brings with it.”

De Beers Wildlife is also involved in various conservation-related youth programmes, including providing post-school training, in partnership with the Northern Cape Nature Academy, to support students who want a future in the game industry. Tertiary education is further supported through two dedicated research facilities for the use of students.
